SANDHURST TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

The Fizzers are pleased to announce after a thorough selection and short listing process the appointment of
Salv Diprima and Dan Turkington as joint 1st team managers. Salv and Dan live locally and bring to the Fizzers an in depth knowledge of the local football scene from both a management and player perspective. Attributes absolutely essential to our club at this time and stage of our development.

Well known and respected in local football circles they also enjoy and have developed strong relationships with more senior clubs in the area and further afield. Salv and Dan join us from Beaconsfield Sycob F.C. where they have been successfully managing their reserve side currently 3rd in the Suburban League Northern Division. Please join me in welcoming them to the Fizzers for their first home game in charge tonight v Knaphill in the Southern Combination Cup KO 7-45pm.

Many thanks to our selection panel for their support, time and commitment over the last two weeks, in particular player representatives Ross Hogston and Anthony Millerick for their valuable insights and support as well as managing the team with Mark Hurst during this transition period.

Regards. Tony.

The Social and Community Value of Football

Where once ,football was a topic to be avoided in “polite” company and whether you love it, dislike it, can’t get enough of it, are exposed to far too much of it, are well informed or ill informed football today permeates all levels of society around the world. In England it is estimated that 39% of the population “follow” football in some way. The Football Association statistics indicate there are over 7 million participants with an additional 5 million in schools, 500.000 volunteers, and 37500 clubs including 9,000 youth clubs and over 2000 competitions. Amid all the machinations and sensationalism around the Premier League, FIFA, financial and management scandals it is easy to forget the force for good that football along with other sports provides particularly at the “grassroots” level. There is consensus and most people will agree that the availability of good quality sporting opportunity and facilities can mitigate against social unrest and antisocial behaviour in our society.

In this respect Sandhurst is extremely fortunate with the wealth of clubs, activities and variety of facilities available in the area. In particular Sandhurst Town F.C. or “The Fizzers” can trace its origins back to the early 1900’s.Formed in 1910 as a village team for local workers it has seen many changes since then and last year celebrated its centenary. The club has steadily grown to be the senior football club in the Sandhurst and Bracknell Forest area. The club provides the all important bridge from junior to senior football. Starting with the opportunity to play in the midweek floodlit U18 Youth League football where only lack of ambition and ability will stop progression to the Fizzers reserves, first team and beyond or just enjoy your football at a quality club.

Today, the club has four teams and over 80 registered players in the 16 + years age group,

- A first eleven playing in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League, last season, having won the League Cup for the first time in the clubs history.

- A reserve team playing in the Combined Counties League, Reserve Division.

- Two U18 youth teams, one playing for a number of seasons in the Southern Youth League and a second youth team newly formed this year to meet the demands of young players coming from junior clubs in the area playing in the Allied Counties Youth League.

The club can rightly claim to be a source for civic pride in Sandhurst. Apart from the specifics of sporting delivery and excellence the club enjoys what is regarded as one of the best playing surfaces and player clubhouse facilities in the area. The picturesque location of the clubs enclosed ground at “Bottom Meadow” is second to none, nestling in and complimenting the award winning Sandhurst Memorial Park.

In recent years the club has turned its attention to broader issues than purely the provision of sporting opportunity and focused on the wider role the club can play in the community adding social value. The club actively supports the Sandhurst Respect, Responsibility and Rights community initiative which dovetails well with the Football Association Respect campaign.  The club is also in the 3rd year of working with the Thames Valley Probation Service supporting their Community Payback Scheme for offenders to provide valuable support and assistance to the club in maintaining its clubhouse and facilities.

The club draws over 90% of its players and management team from the Sandhurst, Bracknell Forest and local area. The club today is entirely self funded and run as a social business on a break even basis, not an easy task in these challenging economic times. With a strong, highly qualified and motivated team of unpaid volunteers the Fizzers is one of the few clubs in the area to boast a number of UEFA B licensed football coaches ensuring first class coaching for its players, complimented by a number of Football Association qualified level 1 and 2 coaches. The club takes very seriously its role and responsibilities, respecting the environment and as a key constituent of the local community, adding social and community value and cohesion through the provision of sporting opportunity and friendship to what can be a vulnerable age group. In addition it’s growing involvement in developing broader links and co-operation with other sports clubs and stakeholders in the Sandhurst area forms an integral of the club’s development plans. The club is always looking for new ideas, sponsors and volunteers to assist with the exciting developments at the club on the football, non football or management side. The club has two explanations of its unusual nickname of the Fizzers, and it is unclear if the two are related. One explanation states that it derives from a Friendly Insurance Society (F.I.S.) set up in Sandhurst in 1933. Alternatively  that the nickname originates from our supporters standing behind an opposing team's goal and shouting "Fizz Fizz Bang" when the ball went into the net.
